I continue the mech design process by refining the procedural concept in zbrush and maya.
Started off with a basemesh in zbrush, created some kit pieces in maya and then instanced them on the basemesh geo using MASH. Render was in Redshift with no-UV materials and round corners. This represents rough concept art that can be refined and made more functional looking and less cluttered. Comped in nuke.
A custom texture can be extremely useful for the UV layout stage of modeling. In addition to checking for distortion or warping these images allow an artist to check for the appropriate texture resolution by previewing and checking for blurriness. They can also be used to make sure UVs are not flipped or rotated in the wrong direction and to compare the UV space used by different models or chunks of geometry.
We created a useful folder template for VFX artists and studios with custom icons for some commonly used Visual Effects software. Download the zip file to check it out! There is a .psd file included if you’d like to add any other software packages.
